about

Chaidh an t-òran a dhèanamh mu 1838 nuair a dh'fhàg muinntir oighreachd Inbhir Fhèisidh an cuid dhachaighean feuch beatha ùr a shireadh ann an Astràilia.

Composed by Donald Campbell (Dòmhnall Phàil), who was known as the 'Kingussie Bàrd'. This is one of the most popular Gaelic emigrant songs.

lyrics

Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan,
Gu talamh a' gheallaidh far nach fairich iad fuachd.
Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan.

Sinn a' fàgail na tìr’ seo oir cha chinnich ann nì dhuinn;
Tha 'm buntat' air dol dhìth oirnn is cha chinn iad le fuachd.
Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan.

Sinn a' fàgail an àit' seo bhon a chuir iad mòr mhàl oirnn,
Nuair a thig an Fhèill Màrtainn cha bhith nàir' air ar gruaidh.
Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan.

Gheibh sinn crodh agus caoraich, gheibh sinn sinn cruithneachd air raointean,
'S cha bhith e cho daor dhuinn ri fraoch an taobh tuath.
Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan.

Nuair a thèid mi don mhunadh a-mach le mo ghunna,
Cha bhith geamair no duine gam chur air an ruaig.
Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan.

Chan e clag Chinn a' Ghiùthsaich bhios nise gar dùsgadh,
'S cha bhi e gu diùbhras ged nach dùisg sinn cho luath.
Gu ma slàn do na fearaibh thèid thairis an cuan.

Good health to the men who go across the sea,
To the promised land where they will feel no cold,
Good health to the men who go across the sea.

We are leaving this land because nothing will grow for us,
The potatoes have gone to waste and will not grow in the cold.
Good health to the men who go across the sea,

When we leave this land they will not burden us with great rent,
And Martinmas will not cause shame on us.
Good health to the men who go across the sea,

We'll get cattle and sheep, we'll get wheat on the plains,
And it won't be as costly for us as the heather in the north.
Good health to the men who go across the sea,

When I go out to the moorland with my gun,
No gamekeeper or other person will chase me.
Good health to the men who go across the sea.

And they will not awaken us with the bell of Kingussie,
And it will not matter if we don't waken so early.
Good health to the men who go across the sea.
