about

‘S e òran is fonn Èireannach ainmeil a tha seo - Ar Éirinn ní 'neosfainn cé hí. Chaidh a dhèanamh nuair nach robh cead aig bàird Èireann a mholadh, tha e coltach gur e Èireann an tè ann an ceist san òran a tha seo.

This popular Irish song was adapted for Scottish Gaelic by Brian. While at appears to be a sweet love song on the surface it is thought that the bard is singing of his love for Ireland (at a time when patriotic songs for Ireland were banned).

lyrics

An-raoir is mi spaiteareachd thall
Ar m' fhearran-sa leathan na glinn(e)
Nochd gruagach thugam bho nall
A dh'fhàg tuirseach is brònach, lag mi.
Is mi glaicte bho (a) beus is a h-àill'.
A beul tana, beò, milis binn
Is chaidh mise thuice gun dàil
Is air m' anam chan innisinn cò i

Nan toireadh a' bhean feart dom ghlòr
'S e a dh’innsinn dhi a bhiodh fìor
Gu deimhinn dhut dhèanainn an gnòthach
I a dhìonadh, is a ghlèidheadh gu crìoch
Leughainn dhi sgeul bhom stòr(as)
'S bu mhiann leam a toirt do m' chrìdhe
Far am bi i gu sàbhailt gu deò
Is air m' anam chan innisinn cò i

Tha rìbhinn ann, bòidheach is òg
Air an taobh thall den àite leam fhìn
Tha fèile is coibhneas, is bòidhch'
Is maise cho mòr innte fhìn,
Is a falt a' tuiteam gu feòir
A' dearsadh mar òr bhuidhe mhìn
Tha lasadh 'na leacainn mar ròs
Is air m' anam chan innisinn cò i

Last night as I was wandering
Through my lands in the broad glen
A lass appeared before me
And left me sad and weak
I was taken by her manner and beauty
Her slender, sweet mouth
And I went to her without delay
On my soul, I won’t tell who she is

If this virtuous woman were to receive my paise
What I'd say to her would be true
I certainly would act
On protecting and holding her forever
I would read her stories from my collection
And I would like to take her to my heart
Where she would be safe forever
By my soul, I won’t tell who she is

There is a maiden, young and fair
On the far side of where I stay
She is full of hospitality, kindness
And beauty
And her hair falls to the grass
Shining like fine yellow gold
That lights up her rosy cheeks
By my soul, I won't tell who she is
